Description
La Gadoue Blue Stone Sculptural object Glazed stoneware, handmade and built using the coil method One-off piece Brussels 2021 H55 D24 cm In Belgium, ‘blue stone’ refers to the grey-blue limestone quarried in Wallonia, an iconic material in the country’s architecture, from house thresholds to monumental façades. The Brussels-based studio La Gadoue, founded by Éloïse Maës and Audrey Werthle, has taken its name for this sculptural stoneware piece, a tribute to the mineral material of their region. Made using the coil-building technique – an age-old method involving the layering of clay coils – the piece bears the marks of the maker’s hand. The two designers, whose practice blends ceramics and textiles, demonstrate their focus on textures and colours in this work.
