Oskar Bottoli* (Vienna 1921 – 1995 Vienna) Sitting Nude, 1967 pastel on paper, 40 x 29.7 cm signed ‘Bottoli’, dated ‘67’ ESTIMATE €60 – €100 STARTING PRICE €60 Austrian sculptor of the 20th century. Born in Vienna in 1921, the son of a master butcher, he attended compulsory schooling and a commercial school; after being wounded in the war (shot through the right thigh), he carved pieces for a chess set whilst in a military hospital and began working as a self-taught artist. From 1945 to 1953, he studied under Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was his first student, and subsequently became a freelance artist; he was a member of the Vienna Secession. He received awards such as the Theodor Körner Prize in 1966 and the BAWAG Prize in 1983; exhibitions were held at the Neue Galerie Linz (1957), the Vienna Secession (1962), the MAK in Vienna (1976), Art Basel (1982) and Galerie Chobot (2012), amongst others. Bottoli created monumental bronze sculptures himself using the lost-wax casting process, often massive, plump figures with archaic, Egyptian and Romanesque influences, inspired by literature; critics praised his originality, folksiness and grotesqueness.
