Born in Breslau in 1908, the son of the painter Arnold Busch, who taught at the Breslau Academy, he completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and attended art school; from 1929 to 1932, he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine and Applied Arts under Hans Meid. After 1932, he worked as a press illustrator and freelancer, served as a propaganda illustrator (PK) during the Second World War, moved to Hamburg in 1954 and taught at the University of Applied Sciences for Design; he was appointed professor in 1984. Known for his illustrations in over 300 books, he received the Saltarino Prize in 1968 and the Edwin Scharff Prize in Hamburg in 1976; he has been married to Brigitte Borchert since 1936.
