Willy Eisenschitz was an Austro-French painter of the 20th century. He came from a Jewish family and began studying painting at the Academy in Vienna in 1911. He went to Paris in 1912 to attend the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He met the painter Claire Bertrand and married her before the outbreak of the First World War. He was interned during the war and released towards the end of the conflict. He made his first stay in the south of France in 1921, and his artistic style underwent a transformation under the influence of the southern light. He suffered from recurring health problems and stayed at the climatic health resort of Dieulefît. He moved to La Valette-du-Var near Toulon. A member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automnes in Paris, as well as at the Galerie Durand-Ruel and the museum in Toulon. In Paris, he maintained contact with Josef Floch, Viktor Tischler, Georg Merkel and Walter Bondy. During the Second World War, he withdrew to Dieulefît, signing his works with the pseudonym Villiers. From 1951, he also travelled to Ibiza and lived alternately in Paris and Provence. Following the death of his wife in 1969, he returned to Paris. He produced mainly oil paintings and watercolours depicting landscapes and cityscapes, influenced by the nature and light of the south of France.
