As a self-taught artist, he began producing drawings, landscape watercolours and portraits at a very early age and took part in exhibitions from 1948 onwards. In 1950, he moved to Vienna. In 1954 and 1962, he travelled to Paris several times for extended periods. In 1956, Staudacher represented Austria at the Venice Biennale, and in 1976 he was awarded the title of professor. He was a co-founder and leading figure of Austrian informal art, and a member of the Vienna Secession, the Forum Stadtpark in Graz and the Kunstverein für Kärnten in Klagenfurt. Today, his works can be found in the Albertina Print Collection, the Cincinnati Art Museum and in numerous public and private collections in Germany and abroad.
