Markus Vallazza* (Orti 1936 – 2019 Bolzano) Oswald von Wolkenstein Portfolio of 18 etchings accompanied by poems by the poet and an introductory essay by Kristian Sotriffer etching on paper, 53.8 x 39.5 cm signed ‘Markus’, numbered 73/150 incomplete copy ESTIMATE °€ 300 – € 600 STARTING PRICE °€ 300 Markus Vallazza was a South Tyrolean painter, graphic artist and art educator working in the field of abstract modernism, specialising in geometric compositions, reliefs and spatial installations. Born in 1936 in St. Ulrich in Val Gardena, the son of a wood sculptor, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1956 to 1962 under Joseph Wiedermann. From 1965 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Neue Gruppe München (New Group Munich), taught as a professor at the Free University of Bolzano from 1968, was a co-founder of the South Tyrolean Artists’ Initiative, and was awarded the South Tyrol Culture Prize in 2005. Vallazza created constructivist reliefs, large-format acrylic paintings and spatial sculptures characterised by clear geometry, pure colour fields and constructive reduction, influenced by concrete constructivism, the Bauhaus tradition and the structure of the Alpine landscape. His works included acrylic on wood, metal reliefs and wall installations featuring rhythmic composition and a commanding presence.
