Description
[MODERN ART, MOROCCO]
Asilah, Association culturelle Al Mouhit (Éditions Shoof), 1978.
In-4° square (25 cm), paperback, 108 pp. with numerous colour illustrations. Texts in French and Arabic.
Catalogue of the first international festival in Asilah, founded and organised by local natives Mohamed Melehi and Mohamed Benaissa. The event brought together the main representatives of the Casablanca School of painting, engraving and theatre - Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi, Mohamed Kacimi, Mohamed Hamidi, Malika Agueznay, Houcine Miloudi, Abderrahmane Rahoule - alongside artists from the Arab world: Salem Debbagh (Iraq), Mohamed O. Khalil (Sudan), Nacer Soumi (Palestine).
Organised two years after the Rabat Biennial (1976), the Asilah moussem was a pivotal moment in the dissemination of modern Moroccan painting in the Arab world, placing Morocco in the vanguard of Arab plastic arts in the 1970s. The event was later to evolve into an international residency hosting artists such as Dia Azzawi and Nja Mahdaoui.
This is a precious first-hand account of one of the most significant cultural initiatives in contemporary North Africa.
