Description
[Ahmed LOUARDIRI]
Ahmed Louardiri. BRODSKI, Jacqueline & BEN EMBAREK, Mourad, under the direction of Gaston Diehl, Rabat, Mission Universitaire et Culturelle Française au Maroc (Imframar), 1963.
In-12, paperback, unpaginated. 30 pp, 8 illus. limited edition of 1000 copies. A rare account of an unjustly unknown artist who died prematurely at the age of 46.
Two copies, one incomplete.
Ahmed Louardiri attended Koranic school before becoming a gardener from childhood until he was thirty. It was through the painter Miloud Labied that he met the architect Mourad Ben M'Barek and the gallery owner Jacqueline Brodski, who opened the doors of the artistic world to him. A self-taught artist, he held his first solo exhibition in Rabat in 1961 and since then has exhibited regularly in Morocco and abroad.
His work, deeply influenced by his years in the garden, unfolds an abundant universe where luxuriant vegetation, palaces, mosques and figures from popular oral tradition merge in a composition that covers the entire surface of the support. Often associated with naïve art, Louardiri is in fact developing an autonomous pictorial language, both narrative and decorative, inspired by Moroccan tales and legends.
