Description
Hamid ALAOUI (Fez 1937 - Rabat 2018) Nebula 17, 1990 Acrylic on card Signed and dated lower right Alaoui 1990 45,5 x 30 cm. *** Acrylic on cardboard, signed and dated lower right (17⅞ × 11¾ in.). Painted in 1990. Provenance: German private collection, then by descent since 2020. Nebula belongs to the series developed by Hamid Alaoui from the 1970s onwards, following a gradual purification of his language: the geometric shapes are reduced to a single motif explored through multiple chromatic combinations. The colours, applied with an airbrush, create fade-in and fade-out transitions that give the surfaces a vibrant luminosity. In Nébuleuse, the straight line - horizontal and vertical - articulates numerous spaces thanks to the kinetic interplay of colours, while the sober palette, based on contrasts, generates a clarity and purity that make the canvas sparkle. For Alaoui, "Art is the sensitive birth of the immaterial". Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, Alaoui attended the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then the École du Louvre from 1957 to 1974. On his return to Morocco, he directed the Casablanca School of Fine Arts for seven years. Since 1969, he has exhibited in Paris and internationally (Basel, Bern, Zurich, Madrid, New York).
