Provenance Former Algerian collection, acquired in Algiers around 2010. Mohamed Ranem (or Ghanem) entered the Frais-Vallon school founded by Omar Racim in 1939, where he trained in miniature painting, illumination, ceramics and bookbinding. In 1942, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes algériens et orientalistes and was awarded the Prix de la Ville d'Alger. He exhibited regularly in Paris from 1945 to 1959 - at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune and at OFALAC, avenue des Champs-Élysées - and in 1960 succeeded Omar Racim as a teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers. A founding member of UNAP in 1963, he pursued a career as a miniaturist and illuminator throughout his life, in an Algerian artistic landscape gradually dominated by abstraction.
