Private collection, acquired around 2000 in Lyon.
The nephew of Omar and Mohamed Racim, Ali Ali-Khodja began training in calligraphy and illumination with his uncle Omar in 1933, before joining the Muslim arts section of the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers in 1939. Winner of the City of Algiers scholarship (miniature section) in 1942, he held his first solo exhibition in 1946. After independence, he deliberately broke with miniature painting so as not to remain in the shadow of the Racim catalogue, and moved from figurative to semi-figurative and then to abstract art, establishing himself as one of the first great Algerian colourists - whose palette, dominated by blue, draws on the landscapes of Algiers and El-Biar. In 1962, he designed the first stamp for an independent Algeria and the Algiers coat of arms, designed the first outfits for the Algerian ballet (1965), and co-founded the UNAP in 1963. He was awarded the Grand Prix National de Peinture in 1970 and the Medal of National Merit in 1987. His works are kept at the Musée national des Beaux-Arts in Algiers.
