Description

LOUIS VUITTON. Circa 1900–1910. A substantial square travel trunk in coated canvas with a chequerboard pattern. Made of wood covered in coated canvas featuring a brown and beige chequerboard design, reinforced with wooden and metal slats and corner pieces. The panelled lid features a compartmentalised construction characteristic of the house’s earliest travelling trunks. Fitted with patinated metal fittings, original exposed rivets signed ‘Louis Vuitton’ and a central metal clasp. Two removable side handles. The first owner’s “D.D” monogram is painted on both sides of the trunk. An old label bearing the word ‘Cannes’ is also visible on the back. The interior is lined with beige canvas, featuring a label reading ‘Paris 1 rue Scribe Louis Vuitton 149 New Bond Street London’ and a partially worn serial number ending in ‘56’. The presence of the label, the construction, the chequerboard pattern and the hardware are consistent with production dating from around 1900 to 1910. In good condition considering its age, with a few stains on the inside, a tear on the top panel, signs of wear and oxidation, and a general patina on the canvas. 63x63x65cm.
