Description
BONNET (Charles). Research into the function of leaves in plants, and on certain other subjects relating to the history of vegetation. Göttingen and Leiden, Élie Luzac, 1754.
Quarto, VIII pp., 344 pp., with 31 folding plates engraved on copper by Wandelaar, a loose errata leaf pasted onto the endpapers, bound in a contemporary marbled comb-back cardboard slipcase. A copy with generous margins. Spine cracked and worn.
First edition of one of the earliest texts published by the famous Genevan naturalist Charles Bonnet (1720–1793), without the supplements published subsequently. The work consists of five treatises on plant nutrition and the arrangement of their constituent parts. It was the result of countless experiments on the orientation of stems and leaves in response to light, heat or humidity, as well as on etiolation, plant transpiration and the arrangement of leaves. (Quérard I, 408. Pritzel, 981.)
A copy belonging to the botanist Auguste-Denis Fougeroux de Bondaroy (1732–1789), with a coat-of-arms ex-libris vignette mounted on the upper half-cover.
