Description
MOLLET (Claude). *Théâtre des jardinages*, containing a simple method for setting up nurseries, planting, growing, digging in, grafting and cultivating all kinds of fruit trees. Including the flowers to be planted in the flowerbeds used to embellish gardens. Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1678. In-12, [5] ff., [296] pp. incorrectly paginated as 298 (pagination skips from 72 to 75), soft vellum, plain, unmarked spine (contemporary binding). A fine copy. Final edition, without accompanying illustrations and without the astrological section, of this title first published in 1652 (in quarto format and with 22 plates). Even in 1652, this was already a posthumous publication, as the work had been written during the early years of the reign of Louis XIII and published under the supervision of André Mollet, the author’s son. Claude Mollet (1557–1647) belonged to a distinguished dynasty of gardeners who served the Kings of France from Henry II to Louis XV. Chief Gardener to the King under Henry IV and Louis XIII, he shared responsibility for the Tuileries Garden with Jean Le Nôtre (father of André Le Nôtre, to whom the work was dedicated). He also worked at Fontainebleau, Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Versailles, which was then merely a hunting lodge. A friend of Olivier de Serres, he was a leading landscape architect of the Baroque period, and he elevated the design of ornamental gardens to the status of an art form in its own right, drawing a deliberate parallel with the architect’s work on buildings.
