[MORIN (Pierre)]. A Compendium of Fine Fruits, with Instructions on How to Identify and Cultivate Trees. Revised and expanded by the author to include several excellent and new varieties of fruit. Divided into chapters according to species. Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1675. In-12, [4] ff., pp. 9–178, fawn-coloured grained sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Clumsy repair to the lower cover, but a fine copy. The first edition dates from 1667. The privilege (last page) explicitly bears the name of Morin; consequently, the traditional attribution to Jean Merlet (cf. Barbier) is difficult to understand, even though this name appears on the third edition (1690). In any case, the work is valuable for its description of common fruit varieties, particularly the lengthy entries on the apple and pear trees, which include numerous sub-varieties, some of which are no longer cultivated today. A work by the famous Parisian gardener Pierre Morin the Younger (active c. 1650–1690), one of the greatest horticulturists of his time. Renowned throughout Europe for his garden in the Marais, his collections of rare flowers, shells, butterflies and natural curiosities, he contributed significantly to the development of French ornamental horticulture in the 17th century.
