Description
SAINT-ESTIENNE (Claude). A New Guide to Recognising Good Fruit, According to the Months of the Year. With a Simple Method for Identifying Fruit Trees, and How to Cultivate Them. Second edition. Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1687.
In-12, [2] ff., [176] pp. incorrectly paginated as 166 (pagination jumps from 96 to 87, with no pages missing), stiff grained vellum, ribbed spine, speckled edges (contemporary binding). A fine copy.
The first edition dates from 1670.
Barbier, no doubt due to confusion with *L’Abrégé des bons fruits* (1667), attributes the work to a certain Jean Merlet, which seems highly unlikely in the bibliography of fruit trees, as *L’Abrégé* was likely not his either, but rather that of the gardener Pierre Morin.
The author of this short treatise, Claude Saint-Estienne, was a Bernardine monk; his work, valuable for its very precise calendar of care required for fruit trees, was subsequently extensively plagiarised.
