Description
VERA (André). *Le Nouveau jardin*. Illustrations and decorative elements drawn and wood-engraved by Paul Vera. Paris, Emile-Paul, n.d. (1912). Quarto, [4] leaves, V–267 pp., [6] leaves, with numerous woodcuts in the text (views, plans, illustrations), some full-page; green half-shagreen with corner pieces; ribbed spine decorated with dotted lines and gilded floral panels; gilt head (contemporary binding). Only edition. A renowned landscape architect, André Véra (1881–1971) was a pioneer of the Art Deco style in garden design. The draughtsman and decorator Paul Véra (1882–1957), who illustrated this work, was his younger brother. A theorist of the resolutely modern garden, he broke with the English landscape garden tradition by favouring a geometric composition based on the principles of mathematics and the golden ratio. His designs, characterised by symmetry, orthogonal axes and carefully arranged vegetation, combine classical forms with modern materials such as reinforced concrete. Minor rubbing, but a fine copy.
