AVILER (Augustin Charles d'). Dictionary of Civil and Hydraulic Architecture and the Arts Related Thereto: such as masonry, carpentry, joinery, metalwork, gardening, etc., and the construction of bridges and roads, locks and all hydraulic works. Paris, Jombert, 1755. Large quarto in marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red title label, red edges, traces of a library label at the top (contemporary binding). Caps and corners slightly worn, some scuffs. New edition, corrected and considerably expanded. Handwritten ex-libris on the title page belonging to Countess Mniszech, née Countess Zamoyska, 1762: Urszula Zamoyska, daughter of the Governor of Podolsk and wife of Count Michał Jerzy Mniszech, Grand Secretary of Lithuania, Marshal of the Court, Starost of Lublin, Yavoriv, Slonim and Rostoka; he took part in the Great Sejm that led to the Polish Constitution of 3 May 1791, was appointed privy councillor to the court of Emperor Paul Romanov, and founded the Polish Museum modelled on the British Museum. Initials ‘PC’ in pencil on the endpaper (probably standing for Paul Chapuy, a mining engineer).
