Description
DEPARCIEUX (Antoine). A proposal to channel the River Yvette to Paris by the late Antoine Deparcieux, a member of the Royal Academies of Sciences of France, Sweden and Prussia, of the Royal Society of Sciences of Montpellier, the Royal Academies of Lyon, Metz and Amiens, and Royal Censor. New edition, edited and published by Antoine Deparcieux, the author’s grand-nephew, Barrister at the Parliament, Professor of Mathematics and Experimental Physics; followed by a treatise by Mr Perronet on the means of channelling part of the rivers Yvette and Bièvre to Paris. Paris, Jombert, 1776. Quarto, marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). First edition illustrated with a portrait of the author, a fold-out map and a large map showing the course of the River Yvette, the River Bièvre (or Gobelins), and the canal intended to carry water from the Yvette, taken at Vaugien, to Paris. This project has immortalised the name of Antoine Deparcieux. It is the most magnificent idea that could have been conceived at the time to provide the city of Paris with a convenience and a level of public health that it will never enjoy until this project is carried out. All of Mr Deparcieux’s treatises on this subject are collected in this volume, together with various additions. Also included are Mr Perronet’s excellent treatise and an analysis by Messrs Macquer & Cadet of the waters of the Bièvre and the Bure, which it is proposed to join with the Yvette. A very fine copy, with some minor wear.
