DESAGULIERS (John Theophilus). A Course of Experimental Philosophy. The Second Edition, corrected. London, W. Innys, T. Longman and T. Shewell, and C. Hitch, 1745. 2 volumes in-4 in marbled calf, plain decorated spine, title and volume number pages in red and green marbling, triple blind-stamped band framing the covers, double gilt band on the edges, gilt roulettes on the fillets, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Caps and corners slightly worn, a few small scuffs and skin wear. Second edition illustrated with 78 folding plates, depicting various physics experiments. John Theophilus Desaguliers (1683–1744), a physicist, engineer and lecturer of French origin who took refuge in England following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1714 and assisted Isaac Newton with his experiments. He played a major role in disseminating Newtonian theories to the European public through his lectures and publications, including this volume, which brings together twelve lectures on mechanics, hydrostatics, pneumatics, optics, astronomy and the applied sciences. True to the Newtonian tradition, Desaguliers sets out numerous experiments confirming Newton’s theories, particularly those drawn from *Opticks*, whilst giving significant attention to early research into electricity. Richly illustrated and annotated, the volume stands as one of the finest examples of popular science writing from the Enlightenment and bears witness to the rise of practical applications of physics in the fields of engineering and technology.
