[MANUSCRIPT]. – PHILIPPE (Jean-Antoine). Memorandum concerning the Royal Treasury, by Mr Philippe, First Clerk of the Royal Treasury and formerly appointed to hold that office. n.p., n.d. (1749). In-4, [36] ff. (including the title page), covered in regular, neat handwriting (approximately 15/20 lines per page), text fully ruled, old-red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, green title page, triple gilt line framing on the covers with fleurs-de-lis in the spandrels, gilt edges (contemporary binding). The date given here is that adopted by the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, which would suggest that this treatise was composed after the end of Philippe’s official duties; this is, moreover, consistent with the wording of the title page. It is essentially a historical work, recounting the developments of the Royal Treasury from Philip the Fair to the reign of Louis XV. A second part (from folio 26 onwards) consists of a chronology listing the Keepers of the Treasury and the Treasurers from 1356 to 1731. Jean-Antoine Philippe (died 1766), chief clerk to Jean Pâris de Montmartel, served as clerk in charge of the Royal Treasury’s guard duties from 1726 to 1730. He should not be confused with one of his sons, Jean-Antoine-Gabriel (died 1769). There appear to have been quite a few copies of this work, judging by the copies recorded in public archives. The Court of Auditors, for example, holds a copy of this treatise made in 1814 (reference 601 PHI); the Mazarine Library also lists an 18th-century copy (Ms 2771); as for the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, it lists two copies of the same text (Ms-5299, which had belonged to Victor Luzarches; Français 14063).
