Description
[CHARLES VI (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire)]. Textus Pragmaticae Sanctionis [...] inter Franciscum primum [...] Paris, Gervais Alliot, 1648. Small 16mo (100 x 56 mm, burgundy half-maroquin, smooth spine with gilt title (19th-century binding). Covers scuffed. Narrow margins. An early small-format edition of the most important commentary on the Pragmatic Sanction, the famous text issued in 1438 by Charles VII which formalised the foundations of Gallicanism by restricting the powers of the papacy over the Kingdom of France. Guymier’s gloss, first printed in Paris in 1486, became the standard commentary on this major text. A source of discord between France and Rome, the Pragmatic Sanction was renegotiated under Francis I with Pope Leo X. A compromise was reached, leading to the Concordat of Bologna in 1516. The text of this concordat is published in the second part of the volume, together with Saint Louis’s Pragmatic Sanction, promulgated in 1228.
