Paris, Nepveu [Printed by P. Didot the Elder], 1820. 4 vols. in-16 (16 x 12 cm), comprising 1 half-title, 1 portrait frontispiece, 1 title page, 190 pp., 1 blank folio, 17 plates; 1 half-title, 1 frontispiece, 1 title page, 187 pp., 17 plates; 1 half-title, 1 frontispiece, 1 title page, 168 pp., 1 blank folio, 12 plates; 1 half-title, 1 frontispiece, 1 title page, 261 pp., 11 plates, green half-calf with corner pieces, spine with flat raised bands decorated in gold and blind-stamped, untrimmed (contemporary binding). A separate edition (with additional engravings) of the Fables from the complete edition of La Fontaine’s Œuvres by Nepveu (eighteen volumes); the titles and half-titles have been typeset anew. It is illustrated with 60 engravings outside the text from the series known as the ‘Ransonnette’ series, named after the engraver, after works by Chaudet, Lemaître, Susmith, Adam and Huet; this series comprises 24 more engravings than in the original Nepveu edition; they were added by the bookseller Philippe Peytieux, who had acquired the remainder of the edition (see Rochambeau, p. 1822). A copy on large laid paper, with watermarks preserved. The leather has turned a honey-brown colour; there are foxing spots and worm damage affecting the margins of the title-page leaves at the end of vol. IV. Engraved ex-libris ‘Allanah’.
