Description
[DIDEROT (Denis)]. *Le Père de famille*, a comedy in five acts in prose, with a *Discourse on Dramatic Poetry*. Amsterdam, n.p., 1758. In-8, xxix-220-xii-195 pp. Marbled calfskin, plain spine with decoration, red title label, triple gilt lines on the covers, red edges (contemporary binding). A few minor scuffs, a few small areas of leather missing, slight marginal water stains on the first few folios; otherwise a fine copy. First edition. The Discourse on Dramatic Poetry is dedicated to his friend Grimm. “This comedy, inspired by Diderot’s love for his future wife (Mademoiselle Champion), was performed only eight or nine times. In the same year, Goldoni’s *Le Père de Famille* was published, translated by Deleyre to vindicate Diderot, who had been accused of plagiarism.” Tchemerzine (IV, 448).
