Description
[DUCLOS (Ch. PINOT, sieur)]. Reflections on the Customs of This Century. Amsterdam, published by the Company, 1751. A rare Dutch edition of the major work by Charles Pinot Duclos (1704–1772). A second edition, the original of which had appeared the previous year. It does not contain the chapter on magistrates, which appears only in the first edition. (Barbier I, 723.) More than a collection of maxims, the work is a critique of aristocratic society and its pretences, in which Duclos defends a moral code based on utility, the public good and the happiness of the greatest number, foreshadowing the great ideas of the Enlightenment. Bound together with: [GAULTIER (Abbé J. B.)], *Les Lettres persannes convaincues d’impiété*. Sl, sn, 1751. (Barbier II, 1283.) In-12 marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label in brown morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, red edges (contemporary binding). A very fine copy. Handwritten bookplates on the title page by Antoine (or Antonin) Déplanche, ‘in Senatu Burgundiae patroni 1752’. Bookplate: J.M.
