In-12, fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red morocco title label, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this ‘memoir-novel’ in the style of Prévost and Marivaux, recounting the romantic adventures and trials of a young woman of high birth who has withdrawn from society. The plot, rather far-fetched, is brought to life by characters typical of the sentimental and realistic novels of the period: a priest of dubious morality, a frivolous yet generous young woman, a false friend, and a hero disguised as a servant; with its pace and twists and turns, it foreshadows a true serialised novel ‘a century before Eugène Sue’ (cf.
