RAPIN (René). *Les Jardins*, a poem in four cantos; a free translation, preceded by a preface and an engraving; by M. Gazon Dourxigné. Paris, Cailleau, widow of Duchesne, Durand, Delalain, Bleuet, Edme, 1773. In-12, [2] ff., xxx–257 pp., [3] pp. of privilege, with a fine frontispiece title plate engraved by Longueil after Marillier, marbled fawn calfskin, plain spine with decoration, speckled edges (contemporary binding). A fine copy. The first attempt at a French translation of the *Hortorum libri IV* (and, unfortunately, a failed one according to almost all critics…) Originally published in 1665, the Neo-Latin poem *Les Jardins* is regarded as the masterpiece of René Rapin (1621–1687), the finest Latin versifier of the seventeenth-century French period.
