Description
[RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme)]. *La Prévention nationale*, a play adapted for the stage; with two variations, and the events on which it is based. I. Part One: containing *La Prévention nationale*, a play in five acts; its analysis, and the second variation. La Haie, Paris: Regnault, 1784. 3 parts in 2 vols. in-12, [292] pp. incorrectly paginated as 302 (pagination jumps from 276 to 287), [4] ff.; 456 pp., bound in mustard-coloured marbled paper temporary covers, in a double cardboard slipcase, with tan title labels (modern binding). Slight water-stains on the sides. First edition, without the 10 plates or the leaflet ‘The Publisher’s Final Postscript’ attached to the unnumbered folios. Of note is an account of the history of Joan of Arc in the section on the Facts on which the work is based (II, pp. 144–216), in which one finds a criticism of Voltaire’s *La Pucelle*—a rather exceptional occurrence at the time and foreshadowing the ‘patriotic’ critiques of the nineteenth century. (Lacroix XXVII. Rives Childs XXVII.)
