Description
[RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme)]. *Le Piéd de Fanchette, or Le Soulier couleur-de-rose*. Third edition. Printed at La-Haie [Paris], 1786 (1798). 2 parts in one volume, in-12, 172 pp., pp. 173–384, with two frontispieces, imitation light-coloured half-calf, plain spine with decoration, red title page, red edges (pastiche binding). Slight water-stains on the frontispieces, and on pp. 73–124, 173–217, 289–384. The first edition appeared in 1769, the second in 1776, and this third in 1798, despite the false date of 1786 (Lacroix sets out at length and quite correctly the plausible reasons for this backdating). The two anonymous engravings that adorn this edition appear here for the first time, although Rives Childs notes a copy of the second edition that includes them; in any case, they are often missing from copies. This very Parisian novel features a young shopkeeper from Rue Saint-Denis. All the events in her story are triggered by the heroine’s pretty foot, which corresponds to one of Restif’s real-life fetishes. (Lacroix III-4 (gives 1794 as the date of this edition). Rives Childs III-5.) Holland House ex-libris vignette, salvaged and pasted onto the new endpapers. Like other early editions of Restif’s works that occasionally come to light, the volume therefore belonged to the Fox family library, which was made available to Whig high society, who gathered throughout the nineteenth century at this grand London residence in Kensington (partly destroyed by bombing during the Second World War).
