Description
CHINA, late Qing Dynasty–Minguo period, early 20th century. Large Hu-shaped vase, in blue-and-white porcelain, the body and neck decorated with lotus flowers and scrollwork, the shoulder and base respectively accented with foliage motifs and stylised lotus petals, two zoomorphic masks in relief adorning the side. On the base, a six-character apocryphal Qianlong seal mark in blue. (Small areas of missing glaze around the two masks) H. 51 cm Provenance: Passed down through the generations of a family of chemists from the Besançon region, who lived in Shanghai and then in Indochina in the 1920s–1940s. Note: An almost identical vase, dated to the late Qing dynasty and likely from the same kilns, was sold at Christie’s in Paris on 12 December 2023, lot no. 62. Expert: Anne Papillon
