JOHN II the Good 1350-1364 (lily) IOhAnnЄS : DЄI : GRACIA : FRAnCORV' : RЄX. The king wearing a crowned helmet and armed on horseback at full gallop brandishing his sword. R/. ✠ XP'C * VIИCIT * XP'C * RЄGNAT * XP'C * IMPЄRAT. Leafy cross with heart quatrefoil within leafy quatrefoil cantoned by four shamrocks. ♦ Fr 279; Dy 294 Franc à cheval gold 5 December 1360. (3.73 g) Slightly deformed blank. Very fine. A large number of "Franc à cheval" were minted to pay the ransom of the king taken prisoner by the English at the Battle of Poitiers on 19 September 1356. At the time, the word "franc" meant "debt-free".
