Etruria, Populonia. Didrachma of XX units (XX asses) ND (3rd century BC), Populonia.
Obverse: Head of Metus (Gorgoneion) facing forwards, tongue protruding, with ‘X – X’ below.
Reverse: Plain.

A slight mark on the edge at 6 o’clock. From a fairly large and oblong blank, with a well-centred strike. With a pleasant patina. Very Good to Superb.
The wealth of Populonia is notably attested by its coinage, which is by far the most significant of any Etruscan city. A particularly popular motif is the head of Medusa with her tongue hanging out. The Gorgon was known to the Etruscans as Metus, and her name would later enter the Latin language as a loanword for ‘fear’.
