ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK
Bruttium, Carthaginian occupation. Second-type half-shekel, alliance with the Bruttians, Second Punic War ND (215–205 BC), Kosentia (Cosenza)?
Obverse: Laurel-crowned head of Tanit-Demeter on the left.
Reverse: A horse on the right in front of a date palm; above the palm, the letter Γ (gamma).

Acquired from Bourgey in 1989.
With a wide flan, the strike is centred on the obverse and slightly off-centre on the reverse. Even wear with an antique patina. Almost superb.
The gamma above the palm tree is found on coins of the Bruttians, and our half-shekel certainly originates from the same mint in Calabria. Subjugated following the incorporation of Magna Graecia into the Roman Empire, the Bruttians were the first to ally themselves with the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War. Defeated alongside Hannibal, they were declared unworthy of serving in the Roman legions and reduced to menial labour.
