Bruttium, Carthaginian occupation. Second-type half-shekel, alliance with the Bruttians, Second Punic War ND (215–205 BC), Kosentia (Cosenza)?
Obverse: Laurel-crowned head of Tanit-Demeter on the left.
Reverse: A horse on the right in front of a date palm; above the palm, the letter Γ (gamma).

With traces of die preparation on the obverse? The blank is slightly split at 1 o’clock on the reverse, which is slightly off-centre. Grey patina with bluish highlights. Superb.
The gamma above the palm tree is found on coins of the Bruttians, and our half-shekel certainly originates from the same workshop in Calabria. Subjugated following the incorporation of Magna Graecia into the Roman Empire, the Bruttians were the first to ally themselves with the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War. Defeated alongside Hannibal, they were declared unworthy of serving in the Roman legions and reduced to menial labour.
