Bruttium, Caulonia. Stater or nomos of the incus type, ND (525–500 BC), Caulonia.
Obverse: KAVΛ. A nude Apollo facing right, holding a laurel branch behind him with his right hand, and his left arm raised, surmounted by a small genie running to the right; in the field to the right, a stag with its head turned backwards and a dotted ring between them.
Reverse: Similar incus type, with raised elements (laurel branches and legend) of a slightly varied type (without the genie, without the dotted ring).
HGC 1, 1416 – SNG ANS.154 – No. 36; Silver – 7.86 g – 30 mm – 12 h
With descending ‘KAVL’. The reverse does not match the obverse! Of remarkable quality, with a wide flan and all the millgrain. Slight wear on the high reliefs. Superb.
