Sicily, Siculo-Punic issues. ND tetradrachm (350–315 BC), Entella.
Obverse: Laurel-wreathed head facing left (Tanit-Arethusa-Persephone) with earrings and a pearl necklace.
Reverse: Rearing horse facing right, front legs raised; behind it, a date palm.

Acquired from the Banque Populaire du Nord in 1983.
Fairly well centred with even wear and a grey patina. Beautiful style. Almost superb.
Entella, founded by the Trojans around 500 BC, is one of the leading candidates for the location of the Carthaginians’ ‘camp’ in Sicily. It was undoubtedly their main stronghold, where mercenaries in the pay of Carthage received their wages in sound currency, modelled on Attic-weight tetradrachms, with a Greek or Sicilian motif on the obverse – Arethusa on our specimen, and a more freely designed reverse featuring the date palm (Phoenix in Greek), which is the heraldic emblem of Carthage and the Phoenicians
