Sicily, Motya. Litra or obol ND (c. 400–397 BC), Motya.
Obverse: Three-quarter profile head of a nymph facing right, wearing a pearl necklace.
Reverse: Crab seen from above; Punic inscriptions below.

Acquired from the Banque Populaire du Nord in September 1985.
The coin has a fairly wide flan and is well centred. The patina is old, anthracite in colour. Superb in Proof condition.
The small city of Motya, an ally of the Carthaginians and situated on the west coast of Sicily, acquired strategic importance during the Greco-Punic struggle for control of the island. The city finally fell in 397 BC following a siege led by the Syracusan tyrant Dionysius the Elder. The ensuing sacking sealed its definitive ruin and brought a premature end to its brief period of coin production.
