Attica, Athens. New-style drachma ND (134–133 BC), Athens.
Obverse: Head of Athena Parthenos facing right, wearing the Attic helmet with a crest.
Rev. Α - ΘΕ. Within a laurel wreath, an owl standing to the right on an amphora between Δ and an ear of wheat.
HGC 4, 1635 – Thompson 149 b-d; Silver – 4.17 g – 20.5 mm – 1 h
Acquired from Poindessault in 1991 and previously from the Pierre-Carlo Vian collection.
No magistrate’s name, with the letter Δ on the reverse and an ear of wheat. Wide flan. Beautiful grey patina. Very Good to Superb.
According to Thompson (p.73): “The grain-ear symbol strongly suggests that these drachms are to be associated with grain distributions to the people of Athens”
