Cyclades (islands of), Paros. ND drachma (c. 496–485 BC), Paros.
Obverse: Goat on the right, kneeling on its forelegs, with a face. Dotted ground line and outer grenetis.
Reverse: Quadripartite hollow square.

On a fairly thick blank, the strike is slightly off-centre on the obverse. A few deposits on the reverse. Light patina. Very good condition.
These drachmas bearing the effigy of a goat were first attributed to Paros by Imhoof-Blumer in 1902, but this attribution was confirmed following the discovery of the Paros hoard in 1937. In the 5th century, Paros was the most prosperous of the Cyclades islands. Its wealth stemmed from agriculture and the marble trade; Parian marble was not only the stone of choice for Greek sculptors, but also a material of choice for architecture
