Description
ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Caria, Caunos. Stater or tetradrachm ND (410–390 BC), Caunos. Obverse: A female allegory (Iris), wearing a chiton with a belt, advancing to the left, head thrown back, holding a caduceus in her right hand and a wreath in her left, with two large wings spread out. Reverse: Δ-Γ. Triangular pyramid (baityloi) within a hollow square. SNG von Aulock 2349 – K. Konuk, Studies Price, p.210, 101, pl.49 – Kraay, ACGC pl.57, 995; Silver – 11.79 g – 23 mm – 3 h On an oblong flan, with a vigorous strike and good centring. This specimen shows only light wear and is covered with a lovely patina. Superb. These coins were formerly also attributed to Mallos, in Cilicia. The winged creature is often identified as Iris, the messenger goddess of the rainbow that links heaven and earth. However, it could also be a local deity. Baityloi are large conical stones venerated as objects of worship. One such stone was also discovered at Kaunos, in a sanctuary near the harbour, initially interpreted as a nymphaeum.
