Obverse: The river god Amenanos depicted as a bull with a human head, facing right, about to charge; above, a branch; and below, a fish facing right. Reverse: KAT – ANE. Nike, clad in a chiton, advancing to the left and holding a tænia in her right hand. The city of Catania was founded in the mid-8th century BC by Greek colonists from the neighbouring town of Naxos, on the east coast of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. In 476 BC, Catania was conquered by the tyrant Hiero I of Syracuse, who renamed the city Etna and drove out its inhabitants, replacing them with Syracusans. In 461 BC, the new occupants were in turn driven out and the original inhabitants reclaimed their former home, restored the old name and introduced a remarkable series of coins that included some of the finest types ever produced in Sicily.
