Macedonia (Kingdom of), Alexander III the Great (336–323 BC). Gold stater in the name of Alexander the Great, ND (316–315 BC), Sidon.
Obverse: Head of Athena facing right, wearing a Corinthian helmet with a plume adorned with a serpent, her hair falling in locks down her nape.
Reverse: ALEXANDROY. Draped Nike, standing on the left, holding a stylus and a wreath; in the field on the left, the letter Σ (18).

NGC MS 4/5 4/5 die shift (2130991-013).
Well centred and struck with fresh dies. The obverse is in high relief; the strike texture is barely visible on the high points. The reverse is slightly clovered, though Nike is perfectly detailed. Superb in Proof condition.
With a date on the reverse, 18, marking the 18th year of Abdalonymus’s reign (316–315 BC), a gardener of royal descent, restored to the throne of Sidon by Alexander the Great. In 316–315, Sidon was under the control of Antigonus the One-Eyed (382–301 BC). The latter, a former general of Philip II and later of Alexander the Great, was then at the height of his power in Asia, where he would, moreover, be proclaimed king (basileus) in 306. In 316, having seized the royal treasury of Cyinda in Cilicia, to which his own revenues were added, he was the richest and most powerful of the Diadochi. The city of Sidon was an ally of Alexander the Great from the very beginning. Its shipyards supplied vessels for Alexander’s fleet against Tyre and later for Antigonus the One-Eyed. Following the latter’s defeat in 301, the city, along with Tyre, fell into the hands of the Seleucids before being conquered by the Ptolemies around 288
