First Empire / Napoleon I (1804–1814). Medal commemorating the coronation of Napoleon I, designed by Galle and Jeuffroy, Year XIII (1804), Paris.
Obverse: NEAPOLIO IMPERATOR. Laureate head facing left. Below, signature GALLE FECIT.
Reverse: TVTELA PRAESENS. The Emperor, dressed in ancient style, seated on the right on a curule chair, holding a sceptre surmounted by an eagle and receiving homage from the City of Paris, depicted with turrets, in front of a boat steered by a cupid. Above, an ‘N’ within a radiating star. In the exergue, an inscription in three lines: EPVLUM SOLLEMNE / IMPERATORIS IN CVRIA / VRBANIA. FRIM. A .XIII and the signatures PRUDHON DEL and JEUFFROY FEC.

Only minimal signs of handling and hairline scratches. Attractive grey patina. Superb.
Based on a design by Pierre Paul Prud’hon, a painter based at the Louvre, where he painted a ceiling for the ancient art galleries. Having become a favourite of the Imperial Court, he was appointed drawing tutor to Empress Marie-Louise in 1811 and painted the portrait of the young King of Rome, which was exhibited at the 1812 Salon.
