Description
A carved wooden cabinet from Sumène; the two panels and the false door frame are decorated with floral baskets and plant motifs; on the pediment, an eagle in the round surmounts an openwork design featuring a figure in a central niche and foliage scrolls and tritons on either side - H. 265 x W. 189 x D. 64 cm - Sumène, c. 1700 - (restored and altered, particularly on the sides and in the recesses)
The cabinet’s identification file contains, amongst other things, three handwritten letters dating from 1928 to 1938 (difficult to read: a transcription of the first letter is attached) from Mr Henri Bauquier, founder of the Musée du Vieux Nîmes in 1921 and its first curator. Based on a stylistic comparison with a signed cupboard in the collections of the Musée du Vieux Nîmes, Henri Bauquier attributes the cabinet to Jacques BRES (1620–1717), a renowned joiner and sculptor from Sumène (Gard), and specifies that the artistic execution places the work between 1685 and 1710.
