Description

(damage and wear) 12 x 10 cm 23 x 20 cm including frames. The Nativity with the adoration of the shepherds beneath a canopy. This is a pre-conciliar depiction of the scene; the Counter-Reformation, in fact, recommended the removal of animals. He co-signed the 1619 petition calling for stricter regulations governing alabaster work. For an identical alabaster piece: Auction, Paris, de Baecque–d’Ouince, 19 May 2017, lot 232 Similar panels: National Museum of Munich, the MRAH in Brussels or the Städtisches Museum in Trier. The Carrying of the Cross, with Saint Veronica holding the veil to wipe Christ’s head. This iconography first appeared in the 15th century. Signed in a cartouche with the monogram GXN from the highly prolific workshop of Gielis Neins (or Nyns or Neyens, or Nens), who was an apprentice to Cornelis Verhaegen in 1609. He also co-signed the petition of 1619. Christ the Gardener ‘Noli me tangere’ A scene often confused with Christ and the Samaritan Woman Signed with the monogram IDH from the workshop of Jasper de Hemeleer (1587 – c. 1637), who had at least three apprentices. He also co-signed the petition of 1619. Assumption of the Virgin. A scene rarely depicted in Mechelen, often confused with the Coronation of the Virgin. Signed in a cartouche with the monogram IVH from the workshop of Jaak Verhulst (1580–after 1643), who had three apprentices. He co-signed the 1619 petition calling for stricter regulations governing the working of alabaster. Expert: Mr Jacques BACOT (commission at 14.28% including VAT)
