Description
Guanyin in the royal reclining posture. Wood with significant remnants of various layers of polychromy. China. (Minor imperfections and losses, partly due to woodworm damage). Circa 14th–15th century. H. 107. French private collection. A striking depiction of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, richly dressed, crowned and adorned with jewellery, seated in the royal reclining posture (maharajalilasana) on the back of a lion lying on rocks, its head raised. The combination of stylistic elements visible in this work suggests a date of creation between the late Yuan dynasty and the early Ming dynasty. Provenance: auction on Wednesday 15 March 2006. Millon & Associés. Expert: J.L. Estournel
