Description
RARE AND IMPORTANT BOVINE FIGURE (part of a pair). Orange-coloured terracotta. Tang Dynasty, China (618–907). H.88 L.112. French private collection. Thermoluminescence test carried out by Arcadia-Milan on the pair from the same funerary ensemble. Reference number BB011. This prestigious piece was reserved for the tombs of the high aristocracy or the imperial elite. Whilst small ox figurines served to symbolise food, pieces of this significance, or those depicted in a team, represented the essential pulling power required for journeys into the afterlife. The strength and precision of the modelling bear witness to the quality of the imperial workshops of that period.
