Description
L'ATLAS (born in 1978) LETTERBOX 156 x 42 x 23 cm L'ATLAS L'Atlas develops his pictorial universe, in which every letter is regarded as a form and every form as a letter. His calligraphic work evolves towards geometric abstraction. The verb and the word are presented as signs and cosmological creations. He has become one of the leading figures of the post-graffiti movement. His compositions usually have an elusive and ephemeral quality, a characteristic inherent to urban art. L’Atlas was born in Toulouse in 1978. He lives and works in Paris. ‘The idea behind this postbox is that of a schoolboy’s punishment, where you have to write the same sentence a hundred times, something like: “I must not tag on postboxes”—a form of self-punishment, in a way… But here it’s with my name. The street artist’s mark is fixed on the object, whereas, in the postbox, the writing moves on...” L’ATLAS, AUGUST 2011 Provenance: Artcurial, Street Art Sale, auction in aid of the Musée en Herbes, February 2012 A similar model is on display at the Musée de la Poste in Paris. Provenance: Yves Carcelle Collection, France. Yves Carcelle was a true symbol of French elegance. During his tenure as chairman of Louis Vuitton, he transformed this century-old leather goods house into a major player in the luxury industry thanks to his marketing genius and charisma. A passionate lover of art history, he sadly passed away a few weeks before the opening of the building designed by Frank Gehry for the Foundation, of which he was also chairman. Yves Carcelle maintained close ties with artists and had a personal appreciation for the contemporary art collection. He had developed a particular passion for contemporary Asian art, which he had discovered at a very early stage during his travels to China in the 1980s. Aponem is honoured to present a selection of works from his private collection at its auction on 26 October, held in conjunction with Art Basel, and to pay tribute to this ‘pioneer and tireless traveller’, in the words of Bernard Arnault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the LVMH Group.
