Description
CHRISTO (1935–2020)
Wool Bales Wrapped, 1969
Graphite drawing
Signed and dated lower right ‘Christo 1969’.
92.7 x 126.3 cm
Provenance:
- Formerly in the collection of André Bernheim and Claude de Soria, Paris.
- Meyer-Ellinger Gallery, Frankfurt, 1996.
Note:
- In 1969, Christo carried out a project entitled ‘Wrapped Old Bay’, commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. This project involved wrapping part of the gallery building in a huge piece of fabric, temporarily transforming the structure’s appearance.
As in many of his works, Christo sought to transform the perception of places by wrapping them, creating a new interaction between the architecture, the environment and the viewer. This project perfectly illustrated the artistic approach of Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude, which involved redefining spaces and sparking curiosity and contemplation in the public.
