Description
BLACK CROSS _ 2018 White neon tubes – Black paint – Flashing light – Timer Dimensions: 120 cm x 120 cm Private collection In reference to _ BLACK CROSS by Kasimir MALÉVITCH _ 1915 Florence Cantié-Kramer creates sculptures and installations that draw freely on her mastery of printmaking (her initial training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris) and deploy this skill within the spatial environment. Her works are characterised by the importance she attaches to the word as well as her choice of materials (lead, wax, leather, felt, rubber, metal wires, fabric, neon lights, emergency blankets, mirrors…) – which brings her aesthetic closer to that of Arte Povera and structures the body of her work. Both raw and poetic, her work plays on the contrasts between elements of language—drawn indiscriminately from popular culture (lyric fragments by the Rolling Stones and David Bowie) and literature (poems by Paul Celan)—and the imagery associated with the materials used. In this way, she explores – even within the urban space and the natural landscape – our contemporary relationship with different types of ‘imprints’ (material, retinal, auditory and memorial) as well as their persistence. Florence Cantié-Kramer also creates videos and video installations. Her work has been regularly exhibited in France since the 1990s and has resulted in several public commissions. Her exhibitions include: Galerie Rabouan-Moussion, La Baule (2018); Musée Massena (2016); Palais Lascaris, Nice (2016); Galerie Rabouan-Moussion, Paris (2013).
